rEFLECTION

Week 1.

The first week is done and dusted. We did a few exercises to introduce us to design thinking, met who we will be working with for the next 6 weeks and received the design challenge. The design challenge: How can we improve students experience in accessing health and well-being services at AUT?

We paired up to discuss the good and bad parts of being apart of a community. This exercise gave us a brief look into the process of what we will be doing for the next few weeks. The challenge, we had to hear (at least) one good story, with this in mind, the majority of my questions were centred around good experiences, not the bad. I quickly glanced over the next steps, I realised we had to identify a problem the individual had experienced when in a community. I assumed when they said a “good story” meant when the individual experienced something good in their community, not when they experienced something that stuck with them, could be good or bad.
One of the problems my partner faced was when they wanted to join a community but felt like they couldn’t join. Me and two other brainstormed a few ideas around ways that could help.

From there, I combined a few of those ideas to create “Meat and Greet” a day where all of the communities come together, recruit new people and share food. Similar to what the Auckland University clubs do.

When I discussed the final idea with my original partner, we had similar opinions. Where would the funding come from? and each person should be given a token, which they need to spend to help with engagement.
It was a great first day and I am looking forward to the rest of the semester.

During the mid-semester break, Zoey, Grace and I caught up to discuss the reflexivity tool and intent statement. Our group is mainly international students so we wished to mainly focus on international students. Our assumptions were that international students would find it more difficult to interact with the services because English might not be their first language, stigma and cultural differences.
We brainstormed a few resolutions/fixes and How might we statements. It’s quite nice doing this kind of process as it helps to broaden our assumptions and get clarity on what you already know.
